About Let's Play Music

Our Mission

Enriching lives through the power of music.

Let's Play Music is a company that builds, teaches, inspires, and enriches. Based in Mesa, Arizona and started in 1998, we began with a desire to teach music to children in the best way possible. Today, over 450 teachers across the United States and Canada work with this same passion using the Let's Play Music method.

We pride ourselves in providing outstanding programs for developing the complete musician.  We empower our expert teachers with play-based curricula that develop talent, enhance intelligence, and deepen human connections.

While studying Music Education at Brigham Young University, Shelle thrilled at the teaching philosophies of early music educators. The ideas of Curwen, Edwin Gordon, Kodaly, Orff, and Dalcroze sounded so appealing and accurate that she longed to make them part of her teaching.

After graduating with a BA in Music Education, Shelle taught voice and piano lessons in her private studio for 9 years.  In 1997, with a 3 and a 1-year-old, she began looking for a curriculum that contained the philosophies and methods she had learned while in college, but there was not one that she felt taught music in the ‘right way’.  She began constructing her own curriculum for children's music lessons, which incorporates solfege, ear training, piano skills, note reading, and classical music study in a playful class setting. She then taught the first Let’s Play Music classes with her 4-year-old daughter Sydney, in 1998.

As the popularity of Let’s Play Music grew, Shelle could not handle the demands of all the classes, so in 2000 she and Amberlee Moffett began training other teachers to teach the Let’s Play Music method.  By 2007 there were over 50 teachers and Shelle hired Teacher Advisors Julie Fischbeck, Marci Flowers, and Jenny Smith to help train and mentor new teachers.  They continued to build the business together and by 2011 when it had grown to 250 teachers, her husband, Dave joined the company to run the executive and operations sides of the business.

In 2012, the Sound Beginnings curriculum, developed by Raya Leavitt, was introduced as part of the Let’s Play Music programs and over 50 teachers across the country brought education through musical play to their communities.  In 2015, Heather Prusse joined the company as the Sound Beginnings manager and has now created new semesters and revised the early music education curriculum first introduced by Raya.

Our Presto story began in 2015 when Annalee Dinkel approached the company with her idea to create Let’s Play Music children's music lessons for the older beginner who had missed starting at age 4-5.  This program was tested and piloted in 2016 and 2017, and then released for teachers to begin teaching it in the fall of 2018.

Shelle has since earned an MM in Music Teaching and Learning from ASU. She and Dave enjoy working together along with staff: Julie Fischbeck, Jenny Smith, Symone Lund, Kyli Harper, Marnie Christensen, Darren Nicoll, Janalee Marriott, Heidi Priday, and Amber Uchytil.  There are now over 450 teachers and 13,000 students nationwide. They have enjoyed seeing each of their 5 children, Sydney, Jess, Jake, Josh and Sadie, develop into musicians through the Let’s Play Music programs and now have two grand-daughters in the LPM programs.  They work and live in Mesa, AZ and operate the business with sincere hope that it will be used to bring the joy of music into the lives of children and families, and that it will provide a fulfilling financial opportunity for teachers.
